Thani Oruvan 2 (transl.The Sole One 2) is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Mohan Raja and produced by AGS Entertainment. A sequel to Thani Oruvan (2015), Ravi Mohan and Nayanthara reprise their roles from the first film.

Mohan Raja officially announced the sequel to Thani Oruvan in August 2018, however Ravi's prior commitments, including the Ponniyin Selvan film series, led to a delay in its production. In August 2023, it was announced that the production, which includes principal photography, would begin in 2024.

Development

After the success of Thani Oruvan (2015), Mohan Raja announced a sequel for the film and the film's works would start after finished his works on his project with Sivakarthikeyan, later named Velaikkaran (2017).[1] On the third year since the release of Thani Oruvan, (28 August 2018); Raja announced that he and Ravi Mohan were going to work together on the sequel for the film.[2] In November, Ravi stated that Raja was working on the script and had narrated him a one-liner of the story.[3] In May 2019, Raja, while working on the script, started working on the pre-production for the film.[4] After two years since the announcement, Ravi stated that the film would start works when he finishes the commitments to his films, and also stated that Raja had finished writing the script.[5]

In January 2023, Ravi stated that the film was supposed to start in 2019, however his casting in Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023) caused the film to be put on hold.[6] During a promotion for Agilan (2023), Ravi confirmed that the film would start in 2024.[7] In August 2023, Ravi underwent through a look test for a promotional video of the film.[8] The video shooting wrapped by 22 August 2023,[9] and the video was released publicly on 28 August, coinciding 8 years since the release of Thani Oruvan.[10]

Casting

Ravi and Nayanthara are reprising their role from the original film as ASP Mithran IPS and forensic specialist Mahima, respectively.[11] In late August 2023, Arvind Swamy, who also played a role in the first film as Siddharth Abhimanyu, was reported to reprise his role in the sequel.[12]

Filming

Principal photography began with an inaugural puja ceremony on 21 February 2024 in Chennai. As Ravi was filming outside the location, he was unable to attend the puja.[13]
