Platanares was created on 13 May 1966 by Decreto Ejecutivo 2. Segregated from San Pedro.[2]
Platanares has an area of 79.84 km2[3] and an elevation of 865 metres.[1]
For the 2011 census, Platanares had a population of 7,203 inhabitants. [6]
