The centrepiece of the museum is the Stone of Destiny.
In January 2019 BAM Construction began work on a £30 million programme of works to convert the Perth City Hall into a new heritage and arts attraction based on a design by Mecanoo.[3][4] The new attraction would incorporate displays on the Stone of Destiny and the Kingdom of Alba.[5]
In December 2020, the Scottish Government announced that the Stone of Destiny would be relocated to the museum by 2024.[6]
A competition to name the building's forthcoming museum section was launched in March 2022,[7] with the winning name being "Perth Museum", with 60% of the votes.[8]
