Plot

Summarize
Perspective

Michael, a four-year-old boy, is forced to help his father John grow up. This is depicted as a relatively urgent task because John, a single dad, has received a lethal cancer diagnosis and has to move fast before he stops moving. In his final exercise of agency, the father must choose a new adoptive household for his son. To do this, he is forced to participate in a series of auditions; various potential parental pairs offer themselves, but simultaneously reveal themselves as repulsive or unsuitable. A woman, living alone, is the exception on this string. She depicts herself as troubled, but honest about herself and her identity. John's caregivers become impatient with the dying man's inability to accept his fate and his unwillingness to make his fateful choice.

Eventually Michael understands the situation and uses body language to help John into the place where he now actually is. In the final minutes of the film the father (who can no longer drive his light truck, and has sold it) and son ride a bus to the lower-middle-class home where the boy will now live; and in the film’s final seconds, John and Michael show that they have chosen the single mum as Michael's future parent.
