History

Masjid Alkaff Kampung Melayu was intended as a replacement of Masjid Alkaff, a smaller mosque that was built by the Alkaff family in 1932.[1][2][3] Masjid Alkaff was demolished in the 1980s to make way for redevelopments to the Bedok neighbourhood.[1][2][4] The new mosque was established in November 1989.[5] The main committee for the construction of the new mosque was formed by 30 December of the same year.[6] A groundbreaking ceremony was them held on 4 January 1992.[6] Construction was completed in 1994, with the mosque being opened on 30 December of that year.[7] However, the mosque would only be declared officially open on 29 July 1995 by Zulkifli Mohammed, the then Political Secretary to the Minister without Portfolio.[1] It was the last mosque to be built under the second phase of the Mosque Building Fund scheme that was introduced by the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura in the 1970s.[4][1]
The mosque currently also serves as an educational centre, which include religious classes for those who have disabilities or are hearing-impaired.[4]
Architecture
Masjid Alkaff Kampung Melayu is a three-storey building, with an area of around 3,000 square metres.[1] The first level, the ground level, contains the main prayer hall of the mosque.[1] The second level contains the female prayer hall as well as classrooms for religious classes.[1] The third level and the highest, contains offices and a conference hall.[1]
Transportation
The mosque is adjacent to the Bedok North MRT station which is part of the Downtown Line.
