Koo Kyo-hwan (Korean: 구교환; born December 14, 1982) is a South Korean actor and film director known for his role in the films Jane (2016), Peninsula (2020), and Escape from Mogadishu (2021). He also attracted recognition for his performance in Netflix original D.P. (2021–2023).[2]

Early life and education

During his school years, Koo Kyo-hwan's ability to entertain others was officially noted in his student records. This talent initially led him to consider a career as a comedian. Later, he developed an interest in acting, expanding his aspirations to include becoming an actor, entertainer, and comedian.[3]

Planned to major in acting, Koo enrolled at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.However, unaware of a separate theater department, he inadvertently enrolled in the film department. This mistake turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it exposed him to various aspects of filmmaking such as directing, cinematography, producing, and editing. This experience sparked his interest in directing, complementing his existing passion for acting.[3]

Koo Kyo-hwan's debut film as actor was Children (2009), directed by Yoon Sung-hyun, a classmate from the Seoul Institute of the Arts Film Department. In the film, set in an all-boys high school, Koo portrayed a student initially perceived as a nerd but who harbors an intense passion for kite-making. He was 27 years old at the time of its release.[3] It was followed by a minor role in film Castaway on the Moon as Utilities man 1.[4]

In 2016, Koo starred alongside Lee Min-ji in Cho Hyun-hoon's independent film Jane. He portrayed Jane, a transgender character with a warm heart and hidden wounds. To depict the role, Koo lost 10 kg and made various efforts to develop his unique high-pitched voice. For his performance as Jane, Koo won the Actor of the Year award at the 21st Busan International Film Festival (2016).[5][6]

Koo Kyo-hwan's first major role in a commercial film was as Captain Seo in Yeon Sang-ho's 2020 film, Peninsula. Koo received praise for his distinct interpretation and nuanced portrayal of the character.[4] Initially, director Yeon Sang-ho had doubts about Koo's suitability for a commercial film but decided to cast him after a personal meeting. Yeon noted that without Koo, Captain Seo "might have simply been a villain who put on a show."[7]

Personal life

Koo and director Lee Ok-seop were colleagues in the film industry and developed into a romantic relationship. They started dating in 2013.[8]
