Kayleigh van Dooren began her football career at her hometown club RKVVO at the age of five. After spending 10 years there and progressing through all the highest youth teams, the attacking midfielder moved to CTO Zuid, the Center for Elite Sports and Education in Eindhoven, in 2014 at the age of 15 [2]. In 2018, she was part of the CTO Zuid team that defeated FC Twente in the KNVB Cup quarterfinals (1-1, winning on penalties) before losing to PSV in the semifinals (1-3).
In the summer of 2018, Van Dooren joined Eredivisie club PSV.[3] at the age of 18 to play in the Eredivisie, signing a two-year contract. Following a successful first season, she extended her contract by an additional year[4]. During the 2019/2020 season, PSV Women were on track to claim their first championship in the club's history, but the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, PSV was awarded a Champions League spot, making their debut in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) in the 2020/2021 season, entering directly into the main tournament.
In her first two seasons at PSV, Van Dooren wore the number 17 jersey, switching to number 10 in her third season (2020/2021). That year, she helped PSV win the TOTO KNVB Cup, marking the first major trophy in the history of PSV Women. Her performances attracted interest from FC Twente, where she signed a contract in June 2021 [5]. She scored on her league debut against Alkmaar on 27 August 2021, scoring in the 5th minute.[6].
In her first season with FC Twente (2021/2022), Van Dooren won the Dutch league title and the Eredivisie Cup. However, the team narrowly missed qualifying for the Champions League group stage after being eliminated by Benfica. In the following season (2022/2023), she won the TOTO KNVB Cup and the Eredivisie Cup again. Unfortunately, her season ended prematurely before the winter break due to a tackle from an Excelsior player that caused a very serious knee injury. On May 31, 2023, it was announced that Van Dooren had extended her contract with FC Twente until 2025.
On February 16, 2024, after 15 months of injury recovery, Van Dooren made her return in a KNVB Cup match against AZ for FC Twente. That season (2023/2024), FC Twente finished as league champions and secured the Eredivisie Cup.
The 2024/2025 season started strongly for Van Dooren. In the first official match of the season, she scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory over Ajax, helping FC Twente secure their third consecutive Supercup title. FC Twente also made history by reaching the Champions League group stage for the first time. Van Dooren was the top scorer in the qualifying rounds and finished as the second-highest scorer in the group stage, behind Pernille Harder. She scored Twente's first-ever goal in the Champions League group stage in a match against Celtic.
Van Dooren has represented Netherlands at various youth levels.[7] Van Dooren made her debut for the Netherlands national team at the age of 14 in a match against Belgium U15, which ended in a 6-1 victory. She progressed through all youth teams of the Dutch national setup (U15, U16, U17, U19, and U23) and is currently active with the first team. Her first international goals came in a friendly match against Denmark U16, and a month later, she scored her first official international goal during the European Championship qualifiers against Finland in Italy. She participated in the UEFA Women’s U19 Championship twice, in 2017 and 2018.
In February 2022, Van Dooren received her first call-up to the senior Netherlands national team for 2022 Tournoi de France.[8]. On February 19, she made her debut in a 3-0 victory over Finland.[9], playing the entire match. She was also part of the Dutch squad that traveled to England for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022.
In October 2024, Van Dooren was called up again by head coach Andries Jonker after recovering from a long-term knee injury.
