McAlister was born in New South Wales, Australia.[1] She has a PhD in representations of love in popular culture and fiction.[2] She is a senior lecturer at Deakin University.[3][4] McAlister is the vice-president of the International Association for the Study of Popular Romance.[5] She is a regular commentator on popular culture, romance fiction, and reality television.[6][7][8][9]
