Higashikawa declared itself a photo town (写真の町, shashin no machi) in the 1980s and has done much to sponsor photography since, notably the annually awarded Higashikawa Prizes. In recent years, the number of cafes, general stores, wineries, vineyards, sake breweries, etc. has increased due to population growth resulting from increased immigration from all over the country. More young people are visiting as tourists. In terms of population growth in 2021, it ranked first in Hokkaido.
Higashikawa is separated from Kamikawa by Kitachindake in the east, Biei and Higashikagura, the Chubetu River in the south, and Asahikawa along Mount Kitoushi in the west and north. Approximately 70% of the town's area is forested. The eastern part of the town is part of Daisetsuzan National Park. The excellent natural environment, including Mount Asahi, the highest peak in Hokkaido, is a highly regarded as a tourist resource for the town. The southwestern part is dominated by an alluvial fan formed by the Chubetu River and the Kuranuma River. The flat areas are dominated by rice paddies, while the foothills in the east are largely generic farmland. The soil is mostly alluvial, with the surface layer of clay soil containing gravel making it suitable for farming.
