Charles de Berard Mills and Harriet Ann Mills were abolitionists.[2] Harriet May Mills, their daughter, was active in women's rights. She co-founded a suffragette club, the Political Equality Club, in 1892, which grew rapidly.[2] She was the first female to run for a major statewide office as a candidate of a major political party, running for New York State's Secretary of State in 1920.[2]
