History

The community was named in 1831 for W. P. Garland, who was one of the chief engineers on the Mobile and Montgomery Railroad.[2] At one time, Garland had a hotel, saw mill, drug store, shoe shop, school, and five general stores.[3] Garland was formerly home to a Masonic lodge, Garland Lodge No. 684.[4] A post office operated under the name Garland from 1860 to 1975.[5]
