Gabbie Marshall (born August 22, 2000) is an American former college basketball player for the Iowa Hawkeyes of the Big Ten Conference.

Early life and high school career

Gabbie Marshall is the second eldest of three siblings born to Ernest and Marne Marshall. ^[2] Her father played college basketball for Bellarmine University, her mother played at Aquinas College (Michigan). ^[3] She played high school basketball at Mount Notre Dame High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Gabbie played a huge factor in leading Mount Notre Dame High School to state titles in 2017 and 2019 making it their seventh Ohio state title. She averaged 16 points in her high school career making her the second league scorer. ^[4] She was known for being an unselfish player with an insane defensive ability to stop the best player in the opposite jersey, with a nice stroke from field goal range & behind the arc. ^[5] After having an amazing high school career Marshall had multiple offers from schools like Dayton, Xavier and others but ultimately decided to commitment to University of Iowa ^[6].

College career

She made one start for Iowa but got minutes in every game as a freshman in 2019–20.^[7] She joined the starting lineup the next season.^[8][7] As a senior, she led the team to the 2023 NCAA title game alongside star point guard Caitlin Clark.^[7][9] She shot 25-for-50 from three in the 2023 postseason.^[8][10] She was voted team captain for her fifth season in 2023–2024.^[11] Also known for her defensive ability, she made a key block against Nebraska to help win the title game in the 2024 Big Ten tournament.^[12][13]

Evolving As A Leader

Despite Marshall's ability to produce on the court statistically wise both offensively and defensively she was much more than just a shooter or defensive meniance. Marshall was voted to be the 2023-2024 Team Captain by her former Iowa teammates, she was viewed as a role model by teammates. ^[14] Gabbie's teammates are incredibly grateful for what she does for her team, her courage to get out in front of hundreds of thousands of people and guard the most skilled opponent and give it her all. ^[15] Gabbie went from being the quiet underclassmen coming off the bench to the fifth year senior who her teammates depended on in big moments. In the final four between University of Iowa and University of Connecticut with the game on the line Gabbie came up on a huge defensive stop to call it game for Iowa. ^[16]

Transition To Post College Life

After using her fifth year of eligibility during Iowa's 2023-2024 national championship run, Marshall decided to hang it up and retire from the game ^[17]. The media waited for Marshall's WNBA declarment, but it never happened instead of pursuing a professional career in basketball she chose to further her education ^[18]. Gabbie chose to further her academics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, to work towards earning her Masters in Occupational therapy ^[19]. Marshall recently announced to her social media that she will be moving to Indianapolis, where former teammate Caitlin Clark currently is. ^[19]

Marshall appeared in the closing credits on the April 13, 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live, alongside her Iowa teammates, Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, and Jada Gyamfi, after Clark made a surprise appearance on Weekend Update.^[21][22]
