Fordo (Persian: فردو; Persian pronunciation: [foɾˈdow] or [foɾˈdo])^[a] is a village in, and the former capital of, Fordo Rural District^[4] of Fordo District, Kahak County, Qom province, Iran, serving as capital of the district. The capital of the rural district has been transferred to the village of Dastgerd.^[5] It is near the Shia holy city of Qom.^[6][7]

Demographics

Population

At the time of the 2006 National Census, the village's population was 732 in 230 households, when it was in Nofel Loshato District^[b] of Qom County.^[9] The following census in 2011 counted 667 people in 227 households.^[10] The 2016 census measured the population of the village as 839 people in 303 households. It was the most populous village in its rural district.^[2]

After the census, the district was separated from the county in the establishment of Kahak County and renamed the Central District. The rural district was transferred to the new Fordo District.^[5]

Overview

Fordu, Fordo, Furdu or Fardu a village with more than 100 houses. Headwaters of the Furdu river. Kuhistan subdivision of Qom. Fordo is 26 miles to the south of Qom. Fordo is situated in a deep glen between Hasan Aqa and Furdu peaks. Fordo's sheep are celebrated for their milk.

The village of Fordo is believed to have the largest percentage of fighters killed in the Iran–Iraq War,^[11] lasting from September 1980 to August 1988.

In September 2009, it was revealed that Iran had a second uranium enrichment plant near the village of Fordo.^[12]

Notable people

The late Iranian actor and film director Fathali Oveisi was born in the village.
