Anthony was born to German immigrants Gerhard Heinrich Abbing (1835–1882) and Catharina Ising (1844–1917).[1] Gerhard died when Anthony was 12-years-old and Catharina had to work as a washerwoman until the children were old enough to support themselves.[1][4] Anthony became a blacksmith and accepted contract work in South Africa in 1908.[1][5]
Anthony traveled to Southampton to board the RMS Titanic to return to Ohio in 1912, Anthony purchased a 3rd class ticket and boarded the Titanic on April 10th and was killed during the sinking; It's believed that Anthony was among the many passengers who may have remained locked down in steerage, never having had a chance to save himself, his body, if recovered, was never identified.[1][6][7][8][5] After Anthony's death, his mother his mother and siblings filed for administration on his estate in Hamilton County, Ohio which they received in the summer of 1916.[1][2][9][10]
