As of April 2025[update], American Airlines operates 988 mainline aircraft, making it the second largest commercial airline fleet in the world.[1][2][3] The fleet consists of Airbus and Boeing narrow-body aircraft, and Boeing wide-body aircraft. American exclusively ordered Boeing aircraft throughout the 2000s until July 20, 2011, when American announced the largest combined aircraft order in history for 260 Airbus A320 family and 200 Boeing 737 aircraft.[4] As of March 2024, American has 338 Airbus and Boeing aircraft on order along with 20 orders and 40 options for Boom Overture supersonic aircraft.[5][6] The average age of the American mainline fleet is 13.8 years as of December 31, 2024.[7]

As of 2024, American Airlines has four maintenance bases: Tulsa International Airport, Pittsburgh International Airport, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, and Charlotte Douglas International Airport.[8]
