Alta (Spanish for "Upper") is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Placer County, California, United States, about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Auburn. The village is located off Interstate 80 and along the historical First transcontinental railroad. The ZIP code is 95701 and the area code 530. One of the few buildings other than private residences is the Alta-Dutch Flat Grammar School serving kindergarten through eighth grade students. The high school that serves Alta is named Colfax High School. Colfax High School is 11 miles southwest in the incorporated town of Colfax. The population of Alta was 615 at the 2020 census.

A historical California place once named Alta was located in San Diego County[3] near the present-day La Mesa–El Cajon boundary. This historical place was along the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway, now the San Diego Trolley Orange Line[broken anchor], at its Murray Drive undercrossing in La Mesa.[citation needed] The community was named after the Spanish word meaning "upper" or "high".[4]

The 2020 United States census reported that Alta had a population of 615. The population density was 258.0 inhabitants per square mile (99.6/km2). The racial makeup of Alta was 86.8% White, 0.2% African American, 2.8% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.1% from other races, and 8.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.3% of the population.
The whole population lived in households.
There were 248 households, out of which 22.2% included children under the age of 18, 54.8% were married-couple households, 3.6% were cohabiting couple households, 9.7% had a female householder with no partner present, and 31.9% had a male householder with no partner present. 27.0% of households were one person, and 14.9% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.48. There were 164 families (66.1% of all households).
The age distribution was 19.2% under the age of 18, 4.9% aged 18 to 24, 22.0% aged 25 to 44, 28.8% aged 45 to 64, and 25.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50.2 years. For every 100 females, there were 108.5 males.
There were 308 housing units at an average density of 129.2 units per square mile (49.9 units/km2), of which 248 (80.5%) were occupied. Of these, 77.0% were owner-occupied, and 23.0% were occupied by renters.[24][25]
