In July 2023, Canada's Wonderland released a survey asking guests about three future roller coaster concepts. The concepts were a "Blast Coaster", "Concert Coaster", and "Eureka Ridge Ghost Town" featuring a family wooden roller coaster, likely from Great Coasters International based on the design. The Blast Coaster concept was described as a winged car coaster that would blast out of Wonder Mountain.[1]
Canada's Wonderland removed Xtreme Skyflyer in March 2024 and began teasing a new attraction near Wonder Mountain.[2] On July 20, 2024, Canada's Wonderland posted to its Instagram feed with the caption "Discover the legend within.... 8/8", indicating the date that the teased ride would be announced to the public.[3] Construction fences put up near the mountain during the 2024 season read "Something big is coming. Stay tuned".[4]
The attraction was announced as indicated on August 8, 2024.[5] The park released the name of the ride, its specifications, and the storyline behind it in a press release.[6] To be called AlpenFury, the coaster is slated to open in 2025 and will be the longest, tallest, and fastest launch roller coaster in Canada.[7] It is designed to reach a height of 50 metres (164 ft), span 1,000 metres (3,281 ft) around Wonder Mountain and the entrance to the Grand World Exposition of 1890 area with the station in the Alpenfest area and achieve speeds of 115 kilometres per hour (71 mph).[7] It will also feature nine inversions—the most of any launch coaster in the world.[7] It will be the only ride in the park to feature pyrotechnics and is designed such that fire discharges out from the top of Wonder Mountain timed to the coaster's exit from the top of the mountain.
The park also published on-ride and off-ride POV videos on its website and YouTube account.[6][8] Set to become the park's 19th roller coaster, AlpenFury will also be the second coaster from Premier Rides at Canada's Wonderland following Backlot Stunt Coaster, which debuted in 2005 under the name Italian Job: Stunt Track and formerly had pyrotechnics when it operated under its former name.[9][10]
