Alan Frei studied Finance and Sinology at the University of Zurich (UZH) and at the University in Nanjing, China.[2] He founded several companies,[3] including Nachilfeportal.de. In 2014, he co-founded Amorana, of which he sold a majority stake to the Lovehoney Group in 2020.[4][5] He founded the start-up Center at the University of Zurich.[3]
Post-Amorana, Frei founded the Alan Frei Company.[6] The business focuses on creating content and products for a life hacker community. Additionally, he works part-time as a freelance Uber Eats driver.[7]
Frei hosts a podcast and Youtube channel. He holds Swiss and Filipino citizenship.[1]
Influenced by minimalists like Andrew Hyde and Nicolas Berggruen, Alan Frei began to simplify his life in 2014.
He reduced his possessions to 70 items[8] and, by October 2020, had decided to give up his apartment, staying in hotels instead.[9] As of 2022, Frei has ended this practice.
Alan Frei began curling at age 41, aiming to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics. He is part of the Curling Winter Sports Association of the Philippines (CWSAP), which joined the World Curling Federation on September 15, 2023.[10]
Frei trains with former Swiss professional curler Marcel Käufeler and teammates Marc Pfister, Enrico Pfister, and Christian Haller.[11] Their first tournament was the 2023 Pan Continental Curling Championships (PCCC), held from October 29 to November 4 in Kelowna, British Columbia. His team placed second in the B division.[12]
