Koshi Flood 2024 (Hindi: कोशी बाढ़ २०२४) is a big flood caused by the release of approximately 6.61 lakh cusecs of water from the Birpur Barrage of the Koshi river.[1][2]

According to the media reports, the flood caused by the release of approximately 6.61 lakh cusecs of water from the Birpur Barrage of the Koshi river is one of the most disastrous in the history of floods in Bihar. Local residents said that they had seen this type of large amount of water 56 years ago in the Koshi river.[3] According to the media reports, it is expected that the floods would break the record of the floods in 1968.[4] Due to the continuous heavy rain falls in the Himalayan nation, the level of water in the Koshi river increased very speedly, so all the 56 gates of the Birpur Barrage of the Koshi river was opened. The districts affected by the Koshi floods are Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Khagaria, Katihar and Bhagalpur.[5][6][7]
The floods due to the release of the tremendous amount of water from the barrage have broken the river embankments at several places in the region. The western embankment of the Koshi river at Bhabhoul village of the Kiratpur block in the Darbhanga district of the Mithila region in North Bihar was broken due to the floods. It has caused disastrous floods in region of the blocks of Kiratpur and Ghanshyampur in Darbhanga district.[8] Similarly in the Saharsa district of the Mithila region, due to the Koshi floods people have been evacuating from the several villages between the eastern and western embankments of the river. The Koshi Diyara areas of the Madhepur block in the Madhubani district have filled with the floods water. The district administration of Madhubani has instructed and requested to the people of the affected area to evacuate their houses and go to the safe places.[9]
As of 28 September, the official death toll of the flood and associated landslides in Nepal was 126 with dozens reportedly still missing.[10]
