Initially Zelenodolsk was intended to be a working-type settlement for the repair of shipping transport. In 1932 it received status as a city and the Zelenodolsk Shipyard was designated as a city-forming enterprise. One of the main tourist attractions in Tatarstan is the island city of Sviyazhsk which is located in the Zelenodolsky district.[7][8]
