Waverly is the location of Baltimore Bend Winery, one of the many small wineries established in the state since the 1960s. The Waverly Bridge over the Missouri River is located near here. It is also home to Captain Jo Shelby, a hemp farmer who joined the Confederate cause in 1861.[citation needed]
