The Russian Polar Expedition (1900–1902) (Russian: Ру́сская поля́рная экспеди́ция 1900—1902 годов) was performed by the Imperian Academy of Sciences (now St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences) on part of the Arctic Ocean, northerly from the New Siberian Islands, and the legendary Sannikov Land. It was the first Russian academical undertaking on the Arctic Ocean's waters accomplished on a proper ship.[1] Russian geologist Baron Eduard Toll headed the expedition.
Among Toll's helpers was the young scientist and researcher, lieutenant of the Imperial Russian Navy Alexander Kolchak, future High Commander of the 1919 Russian Army. Because of his anti-Communist views, Soviet authorities misrepresented the history of the expedition.[2] The expedition was under auspice of president of the Academy of Sciences, Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich.
Экспедиция была важна также и с точки зрения геополитических интересов России. Все предшествующие иностранные полярные экспедиции рассматривались их организаторами также как важное национальное дело[К 1][2].
