Failed Colony in North America (1585–1590) / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ultimate goal of this research paper is to create the most realistic explanation possible and finally answer the question of what ultimately happened to the Roanoke Colony. This will not be an easy task as I would essentially be trying to solve a mystery that is over 430 years old. No one else within the past 433 years has been able to solve it so how I am expected to do it? The best answer that I can give to this question is the type of research that I use. The research used for this paper will include a variety of different sources and research perspectives in order to have the most well rounded and balanced research possible.

I will be using a primary source from the Department of Interior. It is a series of documented and published findings from archaeological digs, excavations and structure reconstruction on Roanoke Island. [1] In addition A research paper written by Kathleen Donegan which analyzes Primary sources written by governor Ralph Lane. The Basic idea of her analysis is trying to understand the mindset of people who were there at the time and trying to determine what factors may have contributed to the Colony's disappearance.[2] The third source I will be using comes from a book written by Ivor Noël Hume. He takes the approach of going over both primary and secondary sources of artifacts, documents, paintings, and records from both the Jamestown Settlement and the Roanoke Colony[3] His book follows a narrative perspective and tries to tell a story rather than conducting research. The final main source I am using is a research paper written by Thomas C. Parramore. Unlike all the other sources that I have mentioned, Parramore focuses solely on what most likely happened to the colony. His paper is based on the findings of a previously written research paper written by David Beers Quinn.[4]
In Conclusion I might not definitively solve the mystery of the Roanoke Colony with a concrete explanation. But what I can do is look at the pieces of the puzzle I have collected and do my best to paint the rest of the picture. Or fill in the blanks. This paper has every intent and purpose to finish the story and conclusively find out how the Roanoke Colony ended.
