COVID-19 zoonosis theories are scientific hypotheses proposing that SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, was first introduced to humans through zoonosis (transmission of a pathogen to a human from an animal). A zoonotic spillover event is the possible origin of COVID-19 that is considered most plausible by the scientific community.[lower-alpha 1] It is unknown where SARS-CoV-2 originated or how it first infected humans.[lower-alpha 2] Human coronaviruses including SARS-CoV-2 are suspected to be zoonotic diseases originally acquired through spillover infection from animals.[3] The original animal host or reservoir of SARS-CoV-2 is unknown.[lower-alpha 3] The question of whether humans acquired infections directly from a natural reservoir species or through an intermediate host is unresolved.[3]
