The Colorado Women's Bar Association was formed on June 1, 1979, to support women attorneys in a severely gender divided profession.[1]
The award is named for Mary Lathrop, who had a number of "firsts" in Colorado. She was the first woman admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court in Colorado, the first woman to open a law office in Colorado, the first woman to practice before the Colorado Supreme Court, the first woman to join the Colorado Bar Association and Denver Bar Association, and one of two women to join the American Bar Association.[2]
The award is presented at the December holiday party each year. Awardees are chosen by the CWBA's Professional Advancement Committee.[3]
