The attributed arms of the Knights of the Round Table were a significant element in medieval heraldry. The identification of individuals from the Arthurian legends with particular arms is evidenced from as early as the 12th century (Loomis 1938, 47). By the 15th century some 200 such arms had been attributed[citation needed]: while some were arbitrary, a considerable number, especially those relating to the major figures of the legends, had become fixed. Not all characters are linked to arms, however: none are apparently known for Merlin, Uther Pendragon or Mark or for women characters.
The following list, comprising 145 arms, is based on that of 178 arms produced by Michel Pastoureau,[1] concentrating particularly on French works, and featuring a number of names known only, for example, from lists of participants in tournaments, and otherwise unfamiliar. This is the largest such list available, although this is also incomplete.[2]
