Gangs of Wasseypur Part-1 (stylized as Gangs of वासेपुर) is an Indian crime film co-written, produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film centers around power struggles, politics and vengeance between three crime families. The film features an ensemble cast with Manoj Bajpai, Richa Chadda, Tigmanshu Dhulia in the major roles.
The film is first of the two parts of the crime saga.It was shot as a single film with budget constraints in mind and was screened back-to-back at the 2012 Cannes Directors' Fortnight.[1][2][3][4] The commercial release of the two part series in the Indian market has been separated by a gap of little more than a month, each part measuring roughly 150 minutes. The story of part one spans from the early 1940s to late 1990s while part two continues till 2009. The film received an "Adults Only" certification from the Indian Censor Board but is still too explicit for Indian standards as it portrayed realistic lingo and violence as it exists in some parts of India's rural villages.[5] The films songs are a unique and noticeable mix of local slang's and traditional Indian folk songs that tend to be philosophical and liberal with its heavy use of sexual innuendos.
Part one was released on June 22, 2012 on 1000 theatre screens across India. It was released on July 25 in France and on June 28 in the Middle East & UAE but was banned in Kuwait and Qatar.[6][7]Anurag Kashyap was unable to release part one of the film in Dhanbad where the movie is actually set but he plans to promote part two in the region as he has acquired the necessary permission.[8]
