Some organisms use tools to perform tasks such as acquiring food and water, grooming, defense, or construction. [1] There is considerable debate over what constitutes a tool, and therefore also which behaviors in nature exemplify tool use. Although the definition of tool use is often vague, it can be defined as the manipulation of an external object to alter the properties of another object or to “mediate the flow of information between the tool user and the environment or other organisms.” [2] Tool use in the animal kingdom is rare, but examples of organisms that use tools include mammals, birds, fish, cephalopods, and insects. In mammals and birds, tool use is associated with larger brain size, social transmission of knowledge, and innovation. [3] [4]
