The 1991 Kawagarbo Disaster occured in January 1991, when 17 climbers from a joint Sino-Japanese team died in an avalanche while attempting to ascend Kawagarbo in Yunnan Province. One of the deadliest mountaineering accidents in history, it killed six Chinese and eleven Japanese mountaineers.[1][2]
