A boffin is British slang for a person obsessed with complex, arcane, and difficult technical or scientific research and development.
Once for me that was fiberoptic testing systems, now specialized education, but in semi-retirement, it's increasingly becoming security analysis, non-profit administration, and perfecting my BBQ brisket and ribs!
This is only my third year working on Wikipedia and I’m still trying to find my niche but so far, I've found I enjoy:

For those who make serial (cerial) contributions, this branstar is an encouragement to stay regular and not feel crumby.
My creation of this award was inspired by an editing drive where over a dozen participants, some of them novice editors, met the qualifications to earn a special barnstar, but did not receive it. To all those I found so situated, I awarded The Organical Branstar. Many weeks later, the editing drive barnstars were awarded.
