Wouldn't this list include the Aleutians, the islands between Kamchatka Peninsula and Hokkaido, Sakhalin, Japan (and Okinawa), Taiwan, the Philippines, South China Sea Islands (Spratlys, Paracel, etc.), and most Indonesian islands? I know we should be bold in updating but I want to know if there's a specific reason why these were not included. --seav 12:28, Oct 12, 2003 (UTC)
- There are two answers: a), that the list is for mid-ocean islands only, and that all the islands you mention are either on the margins or in seas that are not considered part of the Pacific proper, or b), the previous single list has been broken up recently and is still in a state of churn. When it was a single list, it wasn't so big of a deal (just keep scrolling), but the breakup means that finding an island requires you to know where it is already and/or visits to multiple articles. For each one of these the article or talk page should give the precise region boundaries, and there should be a flat alphabetical island list too; so every island will appear on at least three lists; country, body of water, and alphabetical. I'm working on plant list now though, will bang on islands later. Stan 13:41, 12 Oct 2003 (UTC)
- Mic and I recently did some reorganising the huge and unreadable List of islands, essentially breaking it up into smaller lists. These are far from complete, please feel free to add and reorganise. I am rather more involved with one or two of the sub-lists and am not sure about what Mic's currently up to, so if you have any good ideas for the overall structure, please be bold. This list is a bit confusing in that many island countries (e.g. Japan) are under "Other islands" while many US islands are listed under two or more places. Also, whether or not the island is part of a sovereign state or not is not particularly important - should be a lesser attribute rather than a major section breakup. Also, need some criteria for "major" islands listed vs. going to another article - perhaps population of 100 or more and/or size of 10 km2 or such.
Suggestion: organize by:
- Northwest Pacific - Japan, Russian, etc.
- Northeast Pacific - Alaskan, Hawaii, Canada, etc.
- Southwest Pacific - Australian, New Zealand, etc.
- Southeast Pacific - Galapagos, Chilean, etc.
... or have them all in a table sortable by region, country, alphabetical, etc.
What does everyone think? Facts707 (talk) 02:11, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
- I have just tried to tidy up the list but more needs to be done. In particular, the long list of islands in Vanuatu requires to be edited down to a manageable length. If someone knows Vanuatu better than I please have a go. For some reason the page gets close to a thousand visits a day, so it is worth a bit of time. Roundtheworld (talk) 08:45, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
- It seems redundant to include - in this list - all (or most) of the islands that are already listed in List of islands of Vanuatu. Perhaps it would be better to do what we did with New Zealand: I.e., link to List of islands of Vanuatu, but also note some of the larger islands. Ross Finlayson (talk) 09:31, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
- How about

Why are Borneo and Hainan Island not included in the List of the largest Pacific islands? Aren't they islands in the Pacific Ocean? 2001:8003:9003:1801:4106:F967:C1E0:B92 (talk) 06:59, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

What are these islands / is this country doing in this list? It is clearly in the Indian Ocean—GRM (talk) 08:30, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- Removed. I also added Timor-Leste—GRM (talk) 08:44, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
Is considered as part of the Pacific islands by the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States —GRM (talk) 16:00, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- I think that is a political decision, not a geographical one. The ACP is an organization that basically represents former colonies of European countries. All are in Africa, the Caribbean or the Pacific, apart from Timor Leste, which was included in the Pacific for convenience. It is not a member of the Pacific Community.Roundtheworld (talk) 07:09, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of islands in the Pacific Ocean's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT⚡ 07:52, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
