Thwaites was born in Burley in Wharfedale.
He was named in the startlist for the 2016 Vuelta a España.[5]
In September 2016 Team Dimension Data confirmed that Thwaites would join them for 2017.[6] In his first season with the team, he took a top 10 finish in Strade Bianche,[7] and in June 2017, he was named in the startlist for the 2017 Tour de France,[8] completing the race in 107th place. However, his 2018 season was disrupted by sustaining serious injuries in a training crash, and he left the team at the end of the year.
Thwaites joined the Vitus Pro Cycling Team p/b Brother UK for 2019. In 2019 he took top ten finishes in the European Games and the Tour de Yorkshire.
In December 2019 it was reported that Thwaites would join Corendon–Circus, later renamed Alpecin–Fenix, on an initial one-year contract for 2020.[7]
