The album made its first appearance on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart in the issue dated February 2 of that year and remained on the chart for 19 weeks, peaking at number 14.[3] it also debuted on the Cashbox albums chart in the issue dated January 10, of that year, and remained on the chart for in a total of 27 weeks, spending only a week at number 1,[4] The 3 singles from the album was "Lonesome Town" "It's Late", "Never Be Anyone Else But You", "Believe What You Say".
The album was released on compact disc for the first time by Capitol Records on June 19, 2001 as tracks 1 through 12 on a pairing of two albums on one CD with tracks 18 through 29 consisting of the other album being Nelson's Other Imperial album from November 1959, Songs by Ricky.[5]
William Ruhlmann of AllMusic said that the album "showed [Nelson] "was having material written for him instead of having to fill up his LPs with covers of other people's hits, he hewed to the rockabilly sound developed by Elvis Presley and others in and around Memphis, TN. In particular, he had become a follower of Dorsey Burnette".[6]
