He served as the 8th Vice Governor of West Sumatra from 12 February 2016, until 12 February 2021, under Governor Irwan Prayitno, having been elected as Prayitno's running mate in the 2015 West Sumatra gubernatorial election. Prior to this, Abit served as the Regent of Pesisir Selatan Regency from September 2005 to September 2015, as well as the inaugural Deputy Regent of Pesisir Selatan Regency from 2000 to 2005 under then-Regent Darizal Basir.[1]
