It elects one deputy to the lower house of Congress for each three-year legislative session by means of the first-past-the-post system. Votes cast in the district also count towards the calculation of proportional representation ("plurinominal") deputies elected from the first region.[2][3]

Suspended in 1930,[lower-alpha 1] the third district was restored as part of the 1977 political reforms and was contended again in the 1979 election; between 1930 and 1979, Nayarit comprised only two federal electoral districts.[7][8]

District territory

Under the 2022 districting plan, which will be used for the 2024, 2027 and 2030 federal elections,[9] the third district the state's ten southern municipalities:

Its head town (cabecera distrital), where results from individual polling stations are gathered together and tallied, is the city of Compostela.[1]

Previous districting schemes

2017–2022

Between 2017 and 2022, the first district had the same composition as in the 2022 plan.[11]

2005–2017

Between 2005 and 2017 the district was located in the south of the state. It had the same composition as in the 2022 plan, with the addition of the municipality of San Blas. The head town was at Compostela.[12][13]

1996–2005

Between 1996 and 2005 the district had the same composition as in 2005–2017, with the exception of the municipality of La Yesca, which belonged to the 2nd district.[12]

1978–1996

The districting scheme in force from 1978 to 1996 was the result of the 1977 electoral reforms, which increased the number of single-member seats in the Chamber of Deputies from 196 to 300. Under that plan, Nayarit's seat allocation rose from two to three.[7] The restored third district had its head town at Compostela and it comprised ten of the state's municipalities.[14]

Notes

  1. An amendment to Article 52 of the Constitution in 1928 changed the original provision of "one deputy per 60,000 inhabitants" to "one deputy per 100,000";[4][5] as a result, the size of the Chamber of Deputies fell from 281 in the 1928 election to 171 in 1934.[6]
