English: "champignons républicains" (republican i.e. revolutionary mushrooms) - French political caricature, a. 1799. The monarchies of Europe, personified by the rulers of Russia, Prussia and Austria and their capitals Saint Petersburg, Berlin and Vienna, watch how after the rise of the French First Republic, all over Europe republics with French support spring up like mushrooms. The Prussian king exclaims: 'God, how quick they rise, it's frightening!' The Russian tsar says, fork and knife ready: 'That will be nice to eat!' The Austrian emperor warns him: 'Don't touch them, godfather, they are poisonous!' The Russian tsar has only recently joined the Second Coalition against France (1798) and hungers for conquest, whilst both German princes have already learnt their lesson after their many defeats in the War of the First Coalition (1792–1797).
Nederlands: "champignons républicains" (republikeinse d.w.z. revolutionaire paddenstoelen). |
