Originating as a "regional council" of the CEWC in England, it obtained separate charitable status in 2001.[1] The original CEWC organisation in England, which was founded in 1939,[2] "went into suspension" in April 2001.[3]

Through its programme of Active Global Citizenship Projects, CEWC NI enabled "young people from post-primary schools and youth groups to understand and confront global issues and challenges".[citation needed] It also supported international understanding and citizenship as a means of promoting diversity.[4] According to its website, "[t]he Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child underpin all the activities" of CEWC NI's programmes.[5]
