Mae tystiolaeth a geir o'r meini cofeb cyn-Normanaidd sydd i'w gweld yno heddiw yn awgrymu'n gryf fod sefydliad eglwysig Cymreig yn bodoli ar y safle cyn i'r Normaniaid gyrraedd Cymru. Un o'r Normaniaid hynny oedd William de Londres, arglwydd Castell Ogwr. Rhoddodd eglwys Sant Fihangel, a oedd yn sefyll ar y safle, i Abaty Caerloyw.
Yn 1141 codwyd priordy Benedictaidd yno gyda phrior a deuddeg mynach. Graddol fu ei dyfiant. Mae Gerallt Gymro yn cyfeirio ato fel "cell fechan" ar ei daith yn 1188, ar ei ffordd o Landaf i Abaty Margam. Yn 1291 ei werth oedd £56 yn unig. Pan farwodd allan teulu de Londres, unig noddwyr y priordy, yn y 14g suddodd y priordy mewn tlodi.
Erbyn iddo gael ei diddymu yn 1535 dim ond £59 oedd ei werth. Daeth yn eiddo i Edward Carne, uchelwr lleol a arosodd yn dryw i'r Eglwys Gatholig ac a fyddai yn ddiweddarach yn mynd i Rufain ar ran Mari Tudur i gyflwyno i'r Pab ymostyngiad ei theyrnas.
Ychwanegwyd adeiladau'r priordy i'r eglwys a fodolai eisoes. Codwyd mur amddiffynnol o gwmpas y safle, a oedd braidd yn bell o gysgod amddiffynnol Castell Ogwr.
Tua'r flwyddyn 1800 datgymalwyd rhannau sylweddol o'r adeiladau preswyliol a dim ond y rhannau cysylltiedig â'r eglwys ei hun sydd ar y safle heddiw.
Mae'r hen eglwys a gweddillion y priordy gerllaw bellach yng ngofal Cadw ac ar agor i'r cyhoedd.
