Slovo je odvozeno od výstřelu děla umístěného na městských hradbách, jež v Praze kdysi ohlašovalo pravé poledne (znamená „padla rána“). Za dobré viditelnosti kdysi astronom v Meridiánové síni na Astronomické věži Klementina každý den měřil průchod Slunce rovinou místního pražského meridiánu (poledníku). Jakmile paprsek Slunce prošel měřicí štěrbinou na astronomické věži, mávl astronom z ochozu věže praporem na dělostřelce na hradbách, kteří po jeho signálu odpálili ránu z hmoždíře a tím tak celé Praze ohlásili pravé astronomické poledne (jednalo se o relativně přesnou metodu měření času). Výstřel z děla byl signálem pro zvoníky všech pražských kostelů, kteří začali „zvonit poledne“.[1][2]
