Z výrazu voda (nejspíše podle hojnosti vody v místě) a vlastního jména Odolen (=vítěz, ten, kdo odolal neboli zvítězil).[1] Jazykovědci se dlouhodobě shodují na blíže nepodloženém názoru, že tento tvar lze není vhodné chápat jako genitiv (který by pak v názvu obce byl nesklonný), ale vznikl haplologií, při níž dvě podobné slabiky za sebou (va+vo) splynuly.[2][3]
