Název vsi, z níž se později vyvinulo dnešní město, je doložen k roku 1318 (de Kladna).[1] Jedná se o jmenný tvar adjektiva neutra kladno („místo kladné“)[1], což bylo pojmenování pro část lesa s natolik vzrostlými stromy, že z nich bylo možné získat klády jako stavební materiál.[1] Jeho základem je staročeské kláda, které dříve neznamenalo pouze (dnešní) „břevno“, ale též „vzrostlý les“.
