Svartsengi (nebo také Eldvörp–Svartsengi) je puklinový vulkanický systém na poloostrově Reykjanes v jihozápadní části Islandu. Rozkládá se mezi hlavním městem Reykjavíkem, mezinárodním letištěm Keflavík a rybářským městem Grindavíkem. Systém je tvořen geologickými zlomy, puklinami, sopečnými kuželi, krátery a utuhnutými lávovými proudy. Nejvyšším bodem je hora Þorbjörn s výškou 243 m.

Mezi sousední puklinové vulkanické systémy patří Reykjanes na západě a Fagradalsfjall na východě. Právě Fagradallsfjall byl první, který svou erupcí v roce 2021 přerušil 781 let dlouhé období klidu, které na celém poloostrově přetrvávalo od roku 1240. Následně na něm došlo k dalším dvěma erupcím (v letech 2022 a 2023).[1]
Island leží na divergentním rozhraní euroasijské a severoamerické desky. Obě tektonické desky se od sebe postupně vzdalují a umožňují magmatu z velkých hloubek stoupat vzhůru a vytvářet novou zemskou kůru. V podstatě se jedná část středoatlantického hřbetu vystupujícího nad hladinu oceánu. Zároveň se pod ním nachází tzv. horká skvrna – výron teplejší taveniny ze spodního zemského pláště. V důsledku toho je Island jedním z vulkanicky nejaktivnějším míst na světě.[2] Celý ostrov je starý zhruba 16 milionů let.[3]
S periodou zhruba tisíc let se zde střídají období klidu s obdobím vícečetných sopečných erupcí. Ty mají výlevný charakter, zahrnující lávové fontány a proudy. Poslední sopečná činnost na Svartsengi probíhala mezi roky 1210–1240 a poté utichla.[4]
Dne 18. prosince 2023 ve 22:13 (místního času) se na Svartsengi, po téměř 800 letech klidu, obnovil vulkanismus výlevnou erupcí.[5] Její předvěstí byl silný zemětřesný roj a lokální výzdvih zemského povrchu, které se začaly objevovat od konce října stejného roku. Erupce začala otevřením 3,5 km dlouhé trhliny na místě Sundhnúkar, řady starých sopečných kuželů, ležících zhruba 5 kilometrů severovýchodně od města Grindavík. Lávovými fontánami dosahující výšky 60–80 metrů[6] z ní na zemský povrch vytékalo 100–200 m³ roztavené horniny za sekundu a začaly vznikat rozsáhlé lávové proudy. Jedná se tak o mnohem mohutnější erupci,[7] než byly ty na vedlejším systému Fagradalsfjall v letech 2021–2023. Tam nejdelší erupční trhlina měřila na délku 900 metrů a průměrně vytékalo 3–16 m³ lávy za sekundu (krátkodobě na počátku erupce až 32 m³/s).[8]
V průběhu 19. prosince se erupční trhlina výrazně zredukovala. Aktivní zůstala jen centrální část o délce 300–500 metrů a výtok lávy klesl na 20 m³/s.[9] 21. prosince Islandský meteorologický úřad uvedl, že po přeletu nad trhlinou nebyly viditelné žádné známky toho, že by se láva vylévala na zemský povrch. Dále upřesnil, že prohlásit erupci jako takovou za ukončenou, by bylo předběžné.[10]
14. ledna 2024 v 8:57 (SEČ) se sopečná činnost po 24 dnech opět obnovila. Erupční trhlina se otevřela jižněji, tedy blíže k městu Grindavík.[11]
