Las formaciones rocosas son principalmente columnas de piedra de entre 5-7 m de alto y entre 0.3-3 m de grueso. Istnieje wiele teorii na temat ich pochodzenia. Można je z grubsza podzielić na dwie grupy: sugerujące pochodzenie organiczne (wskutek działalności koralowców) oraz sugerujące pochodzenie abiotyczne (wietrzenie skał, tworzenie się piaskowych i wapiennych konkrecji, zimne wysięki z okresu dolnego eocenu).
