Ovaj gen kodira cinkov prst-sadržavajući protein, koji može funkcionirati kao faktor transkripcije. Ovaj gen je nekoć bio kandidat za gen za tzv. testis-determinirajući faktor (TDF) i pogrešno je označen kao TDF.[4]
Ljudi eksprimiraju jedan ZFY gen sa dvije prerade. Dok miševi imaju dvije paralogne kopije, Zfy1 i Zfy2.
.[5] Tokom spermatogeneze, pogrešno ispoljavanje bilo Zfy1, bilo Zfy2, rezultira programiranom ćelijskom smrću, apoptozama, na kontrolnoj tački srednjieg pahitena. U miševa su geni Zfy, neophodni za inaktivaciju mejotkog spolnog hromosoma (MSCI). U Zfy nokaut spermatocitima, spolni hromosomi se pogrešno utišavaju. Dakle, na kontrolnoj tački srednjeg pahitina, Zfy obavlja tri funkcije: (1) promovira MSCI, (2) prati napredak MSCI-a i (3) uništava ćelije apoptozom, koje ne prolaze MSCI.[5]
ZFY se kod ljudi najšire ispojava u testisima i prostati. Međutim, 20 drugih tkiva također eksprimiraju ZFY, kao što su jednjak, mokraćna bešika, koštana srž, tanko crijevo, slijepo crijevo i žučna kesa.[6]
Poremećaji povezani sa ZFY genom uključuju bolesti kao što su kampomelna displazija, cistadenofibrom i Frasierov sindrom.[7]
