Klub je osnovan 1907. godine. Član Football League postaje 1921. godine. Većinu svog postojanja klub je proveo u nižim ligama engleskog nogometa. Domaće utakmice igra na stadionu Spotland. 1962. godine Rochdale je igrao u finalu League Cupa.
