mikroRNK (miRNK) su kratke (20-24 nt) nekodirajuće RNK koje su uključene u posttranskripcijsku regulaciju ekspresije gena u višećelijskim organizmima, utičući i na stabilnost i na translaciju iRNK. miRNK se transkribira RNK-polimerazom II, kao dio kapiranih i poliadeniliranih primarnih transkripata (pri-miRNK), koji mogu biti protein-kodirajući ili nekodirajući. Primarni transkript se cijepa enzimom Drosha (ribonukleaza III), kako bi se proizvela približno 70-nt prekursorska miRNK iz matične petlje (pre-miRNK), koja se dalje cijepa citoplazmatskom Dicer ribonukleazom, kako bi nastali proizvodi: zrela miRNK i antisens miRNK sa zjezdomvi (miRNK*). Zrela miRNK ugrađena je u kompleks za utišavanje induciran RNK (RISC), koji prepoznaje ciljane mRNK, preko nesavršenog uparivanja baze s miRNK i najčešće rezultira translacijskom inhibicijom ili destabilizacijom ciljane iRNK. RefSeq predstavlja predviđenu matičnu petlju mikroRNK.[3]
