Klub je osnovan 1887. godine kao Barnsley St. Peter's. 1890. godine postaje član Sheffield i District League. Pet godina kasnije prelazi u Midland League. 1897. godine usvaja sadašnji naziv. Naredne sezone osvaja drugo mjesto u Midland League. Iste sezone se takmičio i u Yorkshire League. 1898. godine postaje član The Football League. 1912. godine osvaja FA kup.
