Entamó la so carrera artística en París, con pequeños papeles en clubs. En 1941 entama una xira teatral pelos Estaos Xuníos, debutando en Hollywood en 1949. El so papel más conocíu foi'l de rei Mongkut de Siam nes versiones teatral y cinematográfica de The King and I (El rei y yo), pol que ganó un Óscar.
