De Rottel isch e grüenliche Fisch mit uuffälig roote Flosse und geele Auge, wo 20 bis 30 cm lang werd und anderthalb Kilo wögt.
De Rottel chunnt i Mittel- und Osteuropa vor bis an Ural ane und zom Aralsee, und au i de nördliche Törkai und ufem Balkan, aber ooni Griecheland. Er lebt i warme suurstoffarme und näärstoffriiche Flüüssgwässer, mitere schwache Ströömig und eme waiche Grund, aber au i Altloif, Taich, Waier und Seeje. I de Schwiiz chunnt er vor alem im Mittelland und im Tessin bis 900 m ü. M. vor. Rottel bivorzuuged starch bewachsni Uuferzoone.
De Rottel fresst Plankton, Wasserpflanze und schnappt au Insekte, wo uf s Wasser ghaiet. D Laichzitt goot vom Aprile bis in Juni wenn d Wassertemperatur öber 15 Grad stiigt. D Mandli triibet den d Wiibli i di dichti Vegetation, wo die abertuusigi Aier leget, wo a Wasserpflanze chlebe bliibet. Noch drai bis zee Taag schlüffet denn d Laarfe. Mandli wered im dritte, und Wiibli im vierte Joor gschlechtsriiff. Rottel wered öppe 10 Joor alt.
