Die lughawe is in 1977 deur die Nello L. Teer Company gebou,[2] wat die meeste lugrederybedrywighede van die Ou Lilongwe-lughawe (FWLE) oorgeneem het, sowat 6 km wes van die middestad. Dit word besit deur Airport Developments Limited. Die ICAO-kode was oorspronklik FWLI.
British Airways het in Maart 2004 sy vlugte na Londen via Nairobi gestaak.[3]
Die lughawe is op 'n hoogte van 1 230 meter bo gemiddelde seevlak. Dit het een aanloopbaan wat as 14/32 aangewys is met 'n asfaltoppervlak van 3 540 x 45 meter.
